Does Chamberlain MyQ Work with Alexa in 2021?

May 11, 2021 by Bob Vila Leave a Comment

does myq work with alexaI hope you agree with me when I say:

Security and convenience is the ultimate benefit combination.

With the evolution of smart home-based technology, it is no surprise that smart garage door openers are a thing. To make the use of smart technology more effective, Alexa allows for voice commands and more accessibility.

The problem arises when certain products are incompatible and that’s where smart garage openers end up. But not to worry! There are still ways to get around this problem.

Today, in particular, we’ll be looking at Chamberlain garage door MyQ and Alexa’s compatibility.

Does MyQ work with Alexa?

No, at least not directly. But it’s not entirely impossible to connect your MyQ to Alexa. There are roundabout ways such as the popular IFTTT method to control your garage doors using your preferred Alexa voice commands!

So how exactly is MyQ made compatible with Alexa? We’ve talked about not 1 but 3 methods below!

How Does MyQ Work?

Looking at how exactly does MyQ work will allow us to understand this technology work differently with Alexa and Google Assistant to allow for more convenience and comfort.

If your garage door is integrated with MyQ technology, then it is definitely connected with your Wi-Fi.

Through the use of the MyQ app, you can send commands that would be relayed as signals to a hub. The signal is detected and triggers a sensor which then fulfils the command by activating systems to either open or close the doors or change the light setting. The technology might appear complicated but it’s actually quite simple!

Why Does Chamberlain MyQ Not Work with Alexa?

As mentioned, Chamberlain MyQ does not work with Alexa. After a series of complaints from their users, Chamberlain releases a statement denying the liability of this option stating the incompatibility is made for security considerations. Users, however, suspect that the profit margins might have been quite a big factor for this decision. Let’s look at the possible reasons for each of these factors.

Security Considerations

A big concern that users speculate is that making MyQ work with Alexa will let thieve gain easier access into the garage. No one would like to provide easy access to robbers into their own house, that would like to sabotage yourself in the back!

Plus, the company would be sued in many cases for the lack of functionality and consideration.

We have talked about the feasibility of security concerns below, so if you’re looking for a detailed answer you might find it there. All we’d say here is that Chamberlain could very well add a pin-look option and resolve the matter.

Profit Issues

Chamberlain is notorious for not working well with smart technology brands since they chose to get profit directly rather than by point or value add options. Many suspect that this might turn out a weakness in the near future, but users can’t seem to stop loving the motors in their garage technology. We might see quite the competition soon!

Despite these complications, can MyQ really be controlled by Alexa?

The simple answer is yes, yet unfortunately, the process is a long one. In order to ensure compatibility and to proceed with the process, you need to have an Alexa account. Now you select the Alexa skill with your MyQ Chamberlain. The last bit is where you won’t find your MyQ, and where we come in with methods to connect your MyQ with Alexa.

But before diving into that, we would like to ask you to take a minute and consider if Alexa compatibility really is for you. If you’d still like to say goodbye to your traditional garage door days, the next section proposes three effective methods!

Workarounds to Connect MyQ with Alexa

How to Control MyQ Garage with Alexa? (Three tested methods)

Since we will be exploring three different methods for how does Alexa work with MyQ, it is better to generally look at the compatibility your model has with each method.

Adding Chamberlain MyQ to Alexa can be achieved by using the IFTTT configuration, the alternative SimpleCommands App, and by hacking into the physical component itself (the last one comes with its associated risks, and I somewhat in the trial stage)!

Examining MyQ Model Before Choosing your Option:

Taking a look at your MyQ model is a given if you’d like a hassle-free work process. Since a lot of these roundabout ways of making MyQ compatible with Alexa involve some sort of cost.

You would not like to spend bucks on a solution only to find out it doesn’t work with your particular model, or that there’s a cheaper method lying around. We can’t tell which hurts worse!

With that said, budget is a big deciding factor in the method you choose.

Secondly, a distinction between old models (that work with a simple push-button) and newer models like the Chamberlain’s security +2.0 system (that does not allow for a physical arrangement). Newer models will have you get really creative with your DIY methods.

Since a physical arrangement is easier to dismantle, you might want to apply your specific models to each of the methods and figure out what works best!

Method 1: Connect your MyQ to Alexa through IFTTT

This web-based application allows you to set commands using the ‘IF THIS THEN THAT’ format. There are two ways you can set your voice command with this app: with a trigger and without one.

Here’s the difference: Connecting MyQ with Alexa using the IFTTT applet. Creating a routine that will trigger the applet. With the second optional step, you will not only be able to customise your MyQ and Alexa compatibility but remove the trigger from the command, “Alexa. Trigger close garage gate” and make it simple, “Alexa, close the garage gate.”

You do require a MyQ premium subscription to be able to continue implementing this method.

Here are the steps to add chamberlain MyQ to Alexa:

1)     Create your IFTTT Applet:

On your IFTTT page, you will find an ‘EXPLORE’ option, click that and then click ‘CREATE’ to start creating your applet.

2)     Add Alexa after the IF:

Click on the IF button, select the Alexa option, select “Say a Specific Phrase”, and add your desired statement like “Close Garage Gate”. Click ‘CREATE TRIGGER.’ This is the phrase that you will be using as a specific command.

3)     Add MyQ as the THEN action:

Click the (+) button to proceed to the THEN function. Search for the MyQ service, select CLOSE GARAGE GATE, choose the desired garage gate, and create ‘ACTION’.

4)     Name your Applet:

Save your Applet and activate it with a name. Simply say, Alexa. Trigger, close the garage gate, to pass your command.

Getting Alexa as a garage door opener without saying ‘Trigger’:

Adding a custom Alexa command as a part of your routine will allow for a smoother command language. Here’s how you can customise how your MyQ is compatible with Alexa:

  • Create a Routine:

Select Routines in the side menu and click the (+) button on the Routines page to create your routine.

  • Create a Routine Name:

Give it the name of the command you’ll be executing such as “Close Garage Gate”.

  • Select When This Happens Command:

You can add this using the (+) button and use whatever statement you find yourself saying. You can use the voice trigger.

  • Add the IFTTT Action:

Tap on the (+) button to Add Action. Choose IFTTT and chose the linked applet. Click Save.

And there you have it, you can now close your garage gate without using the word trigger!

Note: MyQ doesn’t allow you to use voice command on opening the garage gate.

 Method 2: Alternative App: SimpleCommands

Does MyQ garage work with Alexa effectively this way? Yes. Does this method require a lot of tedious steps? Also, yes.

Here’s a simplified version of the steps you’ll need to take to have your MyQ be controlled by Alexa:

  • Download the app. Create your account. Verify your email address. Log in.
  • Add your MyQ connection through the Connect Tab.
  • Open the Alexa app and gain access to SimpleCommands app by searching for the skill, “kloee for SC” in the Skills & Games section.
  • In the SimpleCommands app, add Alexa home skill as a Companion.
  • Create Routines and select the command.
  • Tap “MyQ” in the connect tab and sync.
  • Select “Alexa Home Skill” from Companions and sync. A sync count should appear for the syncs created.
  • In the Alexa app, go to Devices.
  • Select Other and then Discover Devices.
  • “1 Scene Discovered” should be visible.
  • In the Alexa App, create a routine.
  • Select ‘Smart Home’ and then ‘Control Scene’.
  • Select the scene you created and add a routine.

Here’s a more comprehensive guide for this application!

Method 3: Hack your Way In!

In the case of a newer model, the remote can’t be hacked into. This method is quite tricky as it requires manual work with opening the remote and hardwiring it to relay it as Alexa’s voice command.

  • Open the remote to expose the circuit board.
  • Solder two wires from the Meross opener to the button terminals to create a shock that will trigger the remote.
  • Place the arrangement in the range of the motor door.
  • Connect the other end of the wires to the NO and COM terminals of the relay.
  • WeLink Smart Home Fan can be selected in the Alexa Skill Set.
  • Remember to code it to turn it off after a second.
  • You’re good to go!

As you can tell, this method probably might need some level of manual expertise and can be quite tricky to handle. Although we prefer the first method, the other two are measures for desperate need. Use the last one with caution and don’t hesitate to ask for help, you might need it!

MyQ Compatible Devices and Apps

Despite its incompatibility with Alexa, MyQ is compatible with quite a few platforms and third-party service providers. Many of which allows for voice commands and often require some sort of a subscription.

Starting with Google Home Assistant, the subscription has an annual fee of $10 but has superior features like voice control for both opening and closing your garage gate. A bonus feature is an easy check-up you get on your garage keeping you at ease about the security of your home.

With the help of MyQ Home Bridge, your MyQ accessibility expands to Siri as well. You can also use Apple Kit to close and open your MyQ garage gates.

Amazon Key can be used with MyQ gate openers as well. This is a feature of the Amazon premium submission and is made available to Amazon Prime members without a subscription to MyQ. Amazon Key and MyQ connection are made for effective deliveries on part of Amazon to the prevention of theft.

Garage Openers that Work with Alexa

If you find yourself using Alexa for most of your daily chores, it can quite a struggle to find ways to incorporate its use into your MyQ garage gate opener. Many other good affordable options in the market allow for perfect compatibility with Alexa. Here are some of the top-rated products:

Nexx Garage 100:

Close competition for all Alexa compatible garage door openers, Nexx brings to you some neat features while working perfectly well with Alexa, Siri, and Google Home Assistant.

Although, you cannot add routines using Nexx, however, you can both close and open your garage gate with the voice command.

To add to that, Nexx makes use of a function called geofencing where the garage opener will automatically open and close your garage gate as you approach the gate. Moreover, you can now also track the history of your garage gate opening and closing and this makes it perfect for tracking deliveries!

Senclo Fi Mini:

A ranking option in the top garage openers that work with Alexa, Senclo Fi Mini has quite the features. From being perfectly compatible with Alexa, Siri, Google Home Assistant, AND Apple Watch, to working well top garage openers like Chamberlain and Liftmaster.

Its app works well for both android and iOS users.

Not only does it make use of the same geofencing features as Nexx, but it also allows for thermal regulation and monitoring of your garage. Despite it being a little more expensive than Nexx, it’s completely worth the value.

The only con we were able to find was that Senclo Fi Mini works only with one garage door system, two or more door systems would require an additional purchase of a sensor.

Meross Smart Garage Gate Opener:

Another great option for Alexa compatible garage gate opener is the Meross Smart Garage Gate Opener that not only is compatible with Alexa, Siri, Google Home Assistant but also works well with Apple Products and SmartThings devices without the need of a third-party provider.

Although it might not possess the same features of geo-fencing and thermal regulation, this garage door opener does have some quirky features.

You can now install garage alerts and include scheduling (routine) for the closing and opening of your control (something that isn’t available in Nexx).

Is it Safe to Use Alexa with Garage Gate Openers?

A major concern that comes from the link of MyQ and Alexa is the security of this link and in turn the safety of the garage door opener.

Since you can only close MyQ with a voice command, the lack of voice command for opening the gate creates further security concerns. Since MyQ does not operate with a pin code, it might be easy to get access to your garage by simple shouting a command to Alexa.

While we’re on this topic, if you’re using a different garage opener or intend to do so, it is better not to use an opening command with Alexa at all. And if you do, set a unique command rather than a generic one. Swap, “Alexa, open the gate” with something like, “Alexa, please open the gate for John, thank you!”. The latter is harder to guess.

The second matter of safety due to obstruction of the path varies from one brand to the other. MyQ does not solve the problem of indicating to the user controlling the gate through voice control that there is something in the path of the closing gate, be it a car, or another human. What it does is let out a siren and lights to indicate that the gate is closing.

As said, this matter varies between garage openers, as someone uses laser sensors to determine if something’s in the way before blocking and others use pressure sensors. If this is something that concerns you, we recommend looking out for this feature!

Does Alexa work with MyQ for a fee?

The initial set up of a MyQ is free. With Google assistant, the susception requires a sum of $10 annually. Similarly, since MyQ is not natively compatible with Alexa, the use of the most popular web-based application, IFTTT has been opted.

MyQ used to provide a plan that did not charge anything initially, however, after much research, we’ve found that now MyQ’s subscription plan with IFTTT charges an annual fee of $10.

The Raspberry Pi Fiasco

A popular method of getting Alexa to work with MyQ included the use of a small computer called Raspberry Pi which can communicate with devices. With the purchase of some additional components, you could control your garage gate with Alexa.

However, this solution was soon taken down by Chamberlain and there was no association left between the third-party provider and Chamberlain.

In a Word:

In short, Chamberlain MyQ is simply not compatible with Alexa natively. However, by spending a few bucks you could allow for this compatibility.

You can opt for the most convenient method of IFTTT for $10 a year and opt for Google Home Assistant for another $10. If you’re trying to choose between these services, we’d say go for Alexa especially if you own the device since it is not only more secure but allows for greater features like garage monitoring which would only add to the security of your garage.

We have mentioned two other methods that work for different models and might be a way out of spending cash.

However, if you’re looking to make a one-time investment and not break your bank to gain access to extra features, look up the top alternative garage gate openers we’ve briefly reviewed and take your pick!
